Aglianico del Taburno - Riserva - Spartiviento - Cantine Tora
The Aglianico del Taburno DOCG Riserva Spartiviento by Cantine Tora is the most ambitious and age-worthy expression of one of Italy's noblest and most ancient red grape varieties. Aglianico — often called the "Barolo of the South" by Italy's most respected wine critics — is a grape of Greek origin, brought to Campania by Hellenic colonists millennia ago, which finds its finest expression on the volcanic soils of the Taburno massif in the Sannio Beneventano.
Cantine Tora is a family-run estate deeply rooted in this rugged inland Campanian territory, where vineyards grow on clay and tuffaceous soils rich in volcanic minerals at over 400 metres above sea level. The Riserva Spartiviento — the name evoking the wind that divides the seasons across these ancient hills — is produced only in the finest vintages, from a strict selection of the most mature and concentrated grapes, with an extended ageing period in oak barrels that can exceed 24 months, followed by further rest in bottle before release.
The result is a wine of tremendous structure and complexity: deep ruby red with garnet reflections. On the nose it is intense and austere: black cherry, plum, violet, tobacco, leather, oriental spices and a characteristic iron and volcanic undertone that is the unmistakable signature of Aglianico on Campanian soils. On the palate it is powerful, with firm, lively tannins that reward patience — this is a wine that demands time and reveals its best after 5 to 8 years from the harvest. Vibrant acidity, exceptionally long and persistent finish.
A wine for connoisseurs who want to explore southern Italian viticulture beyond the obvious, and understand why Aglianico del Taburno is considered among the greatest red wines Italy has to offer.
