Barbera D'Alba - Selectio - Sobrero
The Barbera d'Alba DOC Selectio by Sobrero is the approachable, ready-to-drink wine from the historic Castiglione Falletto family — though calling it merely "approachable" barely does it justice, because this Selectio is a Barbera of ambition and character well above the appellation average. The name "Selectio" is deliberate: it indicates a careful selection of the finest Barbera grapes from the estate's vineyards, vinified separately and aged in French oak barriques for a period that builds structure and complexity without sacrificing the natural drinkability that makes this variety so beloved in Piedmont.
Barbera is the most widely loved and planted grape of the Langhe — less austere than Nebbiolo, more immediate and generous in its fruit — and in the hands of Sobrero it expresses a distinctive personality: deep, intense and brilliantly clear ruby red, almost impenetrable. On the nose it is exuberant and inviting: fresh and ripe cherry, blackberry, redcurrant, red flowers, warm spice from the barrique and a hint of vanilla and chocolate that integrates seamlessly with the fruit. On the palate it is full and generous, with the vibrant acidity typical of Barbera providing freshness and lift, sweet already well-integrated tannins and a persistent and deeply satisfying finish.
A wine to open immediately, without ceremony — perfect for a long Piedmontese dinner from pasta through to the main course. The ideal entry point into the world of Sobrero for those not yet ready to wait out the ageing requirements of the great Barolo Riserva Pernanno.
