Amarone della Valpolicella - Roccolo Grassi
The Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG by Roccolo Grassi is one of the most celebrated and recognised wines in the entire Veronese appellation — and one of the principal reasons why Marco Sartori's winery in Mezzane di Sotto is considered an absolute benchmark for anyone seeking to understand what Amarone can truly be when born from a rigorous artisan vision and an extraordinarily gifted territory.
The Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella grapes come from estate-owned vineyards on calcareous-clay soils of the eastern Valpolicella, harvested entirely by hand at perfect ripeness and transferred to the drying lofts for traditional appassimento. The grapes spend over 90 days on the drying racks, losing up to 35-40% of their weight and slowly, naturally concentrating sugars, aromas and polyphenolic structure. Fermentation is long and unhurried, and ageing takes place in large-format Slavonian oak barrels for a period that exceeds the DOCG minimum requirements, allowing the wine to develop an aromatic complexity and depth rarely found in this category.
On the nose it is majestic and deeply layered: black cherry and morello jam, bitter cacao, pipe tobacco, fine leather, dried violet, oriental spice, liquorice and a characteristic mineral and balsamic undercurrent that is the unmistakable signature of the great Amarones of the eastern Valpolicella. On the palate it is monumental but never ponderous — this is Roccolo Grassi's great achievement — with powerful but already extraordinarily silky tannins, a glyceric sweetness perfectly balanced by fresh acidity and an endless finish that evolves for over two minutes with notes of dark chocolate, tobacco and concentrated dark fruit.
An Amarone for great occasions and for those who want the very best of the Valpolicella in a single bottle. Available in limited quantities.
