Pomona's Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG Vigna Pomona is the flagship wine of one of the most original and consistent wineries in Chianti Classico - a small Tuscan estate that has built its identity on the purity of Sangiovese, respect for the terroir, and winemaking choices that prioritize authenticity over commercial spectacle.
Gran Selezione is the top category of Chianti Classico DOCG - reserved for single-vineyard wines or wines made from a selection of the best grapes of the vintage, with a minimum aging period of 30 months. Vigna Pomona meets and exceeds these requirements with an approach that reveals remarkable winemaking maturity: 15 months in large Slavonian oak casks to build structure without imparting aggressive new-oak tannins, followed by 9 months in glass-lined concrete tanks - a modern and intelligent choice that preserves the aromatic freshness and minerality of Sangiovese without interference from any porous vessel - and finally 6 months of bottle aging before release.
The Pomona vineyard is the heart of this wine: a single plot planted with 100% pure Sangiovese that expresses the full character of the Tuscan terroir with a precision that only parcel selection can deliver. The 2021 vintage in Chianti Classico was particularly favorable - a steady spring and a warm summer with cool nights that preserved Sangiovese's natural acidity, producing grapes with excellent concentration and balanced phenolic ripeness.
On the nose, it is elegant and precise: fresh cherry and sour cherry, violet, tobacco, Tuscan herbs, delicate leather, and an earthy, iron-like minerality that is the unmistakable signature of great Sangiovese grown on galestro soils. On the palate, it is structured and vertical - firm yet well-polished tannins, lively natural acidity that forms the backbone of quality Sangiovese, freshness that ensures longevity, and a long, persistent finish with notes of red fruit, spices, and earth. Serve at 18-20°C; it shows its best qualities between 3 and 10 years after harvest. At €28, it offers one of the most compelling quality-price ratios across the entire Chianti Classico Gran Selezione category.
