In the heart of Montalcino, in the province of Siena, the Rosso di Montalcino, is made Vigna Poggio Cerrino by Tiezzi, a wine made from Sangiovese grapes sourced exclusively from the vineyard of the same name. It is a true cru Rosso di Montalcino, an expression of one of the most important areas in the Montalcino region.
The Poggio Cerrino vines are around 50 years old on average and are cultivated according to organic principles. The grapes are hand-harvested, and fermentation occurs spontaneously in large oak vats with indigenous yeasts and manual pump-overs. The wine is then aged in large Slavonian oak casks.
Tiezzi describes it as an “old-style” Rosso di Montalcino “old-style”, produced according to the same winemaking approach as the winery's Brunello, but with a shorter aging period. The result is a younger, more direct and immediate interpretation of Sangiovese, without sacrificing structure and depth.
In the glass it displays an intense, bright ruby-red color characteristic of Sangiovese.
On the nose it is direct and distinctive, with the typical notes of Sangiovese from Montalcino. Above all, there are aromas of red fruit, with notes of sour cherry, plum and strawberry, accompanied by floral and spicy nuances.
On the palate it is a balanced, structured and deep wine, supported by significant freshness that makes each sip dynamic. Its structure and acidity are well integrated, leaving a persistent, pleasantly savory finish.
This is a Rosso di Montalcino that does not simply aim to be easy to drink: it has personality, character and beautiful depth, while retaining the freshness that makes it easy to serve throughout a meal.
It is particularly suited to Tuscan cuisine and flavorful dishes such as pici and pappardelle with hare or wild boar ragù, game-cured meats, pecorino, ossobuco alla senese, stews and roasts. Tiezzi also recommends it with traditional dishes such as trippa alla montalcinese.
We like it because it tells the story of Montalcino from a different perspective: that of a Young, direct, terroir-driven Sangiovese, produced by a small winery deeply connected to the area's traditions.
A cru Rosso di Montalcino for those who want to discover the Sangiovese from Montalcino in a fresh, authentic version full of character.
